Our friends at Rotorua Sustainable Charter have put together some great Earth-friendly Christmas gift ideas that we thought we’d share.
- Rather than an object, why not gift a voucher from one of our amazing tourism activities or restaurants.
- Help out local conservation efforts. Here are a few ideas:
- Support Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre by becoming a member or shopping from their range of kārearea-themed gifts
- Feed a kiwi chick for a month with a $35 koha to The National Kiwi Hatchery
-
- Adopt a shark, turtle, whale, dolphin or polar bear for $45 and track it in real time through a gorgeous GPS bracelet from Club Ocean
- Adopt a tiger, penguin, albatross or dolphin for $22/month through World Wildlife Fund
- Homemade or pre-loved gifts are big this Christmas, so cook up a treat, or head to TradeMe for items such as good quality children’s toys.
- If your giftee is into adventure, gift an entry to Whaka 100, or check out the range of products at Aotearoa Dive Shop on Eruera Street.
- Enjoy a lovely drive to the Buried Village of Te Wairoa to shop from their awesome sustainable gift range, or check out our own isite stores. The retail teams at these businesses continue to focus on reducing packaging and stocking more local and New Zealand-made goods.
- It’s time to ditch the wrapping paper and purchase reusable cloth gift bags or sew-your-own sets from Waste-Free Celebrations. They also have their famous patented Re-crackers too, which are refillable and machine-washable. Or grab an old jumper, t-shirt, or fabric remnants and head to RLC’s Waste-free Christmas wrapping session on Monday, 18 Dec, 12-1pm, where you can learn the art of furoshiki gift wrapping.
- Lastly, don’t forget about your fur babies! Waipa isite is stocking natural pet care and grooming products from WashBar for dogs.
